BERKSHIRE ANIMAL D.R.E.A.M.S. Celebrating Ten Years as Champions for Community Cats HOW WE DO WHAT WE DO We are a dedicated group of volunteers often working under very challenging circumstances. Feral cats shy away from humans and keep a low profile for safety, so we have to go into their world to be able to help them. Before dawn or deep into the night, regardless of weather conditions; into cold barns and drafty haylofts, under buildings, into overgrown brush and weeds, we go and get the job done to make life more comfortable for these frightened felines. Once our humane traps are set, we watch and wait. We check the traps repeatedly, often having to return for several days until every cat in the colony is trapped. Just one cat left unspayed can mean another population explosion down the road.  Once all the cats have been vetted, we determine if any are abandoned house pets who may have joined the colony, and re-socialize them for adoption into a permanent home. The remaining cats, those that are truly feral, are released back into their home territory, to live out their lives peacefully, without reproducing, without risk of contracting rabies or other diseases, and enjoying the food and shelters we provide for them. |
